Rituals and observances have been an integral part of the Bhāratīya culture since times immemorial. The worship of the Pitṛ-devatā-s, otherwise referred to as Śrāddha, is one such. This book, originally authored in Kannada by Śrī Śrī Rangapriya Swamiji, is an introductory work on several issues relating to the observance of Śrāddha. The entire book is in the Q&A format, on varied topics relating to Śrāddha such as: the types of śrāddha-s, who are Pitṛ-devatā-s, who ought to be invited for the bhojana, and the significance of Mahālaya-amāvāsyā.
Śrī Śrī Rangapriya Swamiji was highly learned in scriptures, renowned for his lectures and teachings. He was an exceptional orator, a brilliant scholar, and was verily a walking library. He was also a disciple of the illustrious and supremely compassionate Śrīraṅga Mahāguru, under whose tutelage he became an extraordinary scholar.
The English translation by Dr. H R Meera has attempted to preserve the integrity of the subject matter while making it easily readable. Standard transliteration has been used for presenting Sanskrit words and verses in the text, and the verses have been presented in Devanāgarī script as well, to further assist the reader. A helpful glossary of words presents the sense of the Sanskrit words used.
This book, in its content and presentation, serves as a guide for both traditionalists and modern thinkers alike. It addresses the questions posed by modern practitioners, and the revered Swamiji provides apt answers. There is no doubt that this is a must-read for everyone.
